Caffeine is a stimulant, which can be helpful or a hindrance with regard to headaches, it is also addictive in the sense that it can cause withdrawal symptoms if the body is suddenly deprived of a regular dose. Caffeine can found in drinks such as tea, coffee, some soft drinks, food, “energy drinks” and some headache medicines!
Caffeine is used in medications because it increases the absorption of the medication in the intestines, it is included in some headache remedies.
It also increases blood flow to the brain and the level of blood sugar available to it, however after high levels of caffeine have been present and start to decline, the levels of blood sugar drop too, this can cause fatigue, depression and or headaches.
Negative effects can result when caffeine intake is too high causing headaches or if you are used to several cups of coffee first thing in the morning during work days for example, then on a day off you sleep in, missing that morning “dose” of caffeine can result in a withdrawal headache, but any change of a regular dose may give this result.
Working under pressure people may resort to their chosen form of caffeine intake to give themselves a boost, but where stress levels are already high this stimulant can also have the effect of heightening agitation and stress, which can provoke tension or migraine headaches.
If you think too much caffeine is your problem, it is best to cut down slowly or you may get bad caffeine withdrawal headaches for up to 6 days. Chiropractors-How they help your headache !
